Rewritten Fates is a supernatural narrative game set in Moreau & Co. Antiquaries, a bookstore inherited by Elias. Inside, he discovers the Book of Veritas, a book connected to his family's past and the ability to alter reality. The story follows him as he tries to understand what he has inherited and what using the book could mean.
The bookstore is the setting for both exploration and conversation. Books, letters and family objects give context to the mystery, while encounters with other characters introduce different accounts of the book. The player follows these clues and chooses how Elias responds as he learns more.
Aunt Evelyn connects him to his family's history. The Collector encourages him to use the book's power, while Lucian Vale warns him about its consequences. Their conflicting perspectives shape the conversations, with dialogue choices allowing Elias to question, doubt or show interest in what he is being told.
The game also includes a timed consciousness event. When Elias becomes unstable, the player must respond to a prompt to stabilize him. It adds a moment of direct interaction to a game otherwise centred on the bookstore, its characters and their conversations.
A Windows version is available on itch.io, with gameplay footage below. The linked script and narrative overview provide more detail about the story and its development; they also include proposed systems and endings beyond what is shown in the released game.
We developed Rewritten Fates over nine weeks as a team of two. I handled the programming and storytelling, alongside the other development work, while my teammate focused on art.
The script develops Elias’s responses around his uncertainty about the book and the people advising him. Branching dialogue provides different ways to respond to an encounter rather than treating every conversation as a single fixed exchange.
The narrative overview proposes a reality stability meter and a curse timer to connect the cost of changing events to the player’s decisions. These are documented design proposals; the Windows release is the reference for what is currently playable.
Family keepsakes and letters were included in the design to give the bookstore a history and connect the central mystery to Elias’s family.
